Production Horticulture
Frank Jackson, Production Manager, Baginton Nursery

After leaving school at 16, I went straight into training in the horticulture industry. I started a City and Guilds day release apprenticeship in general horticulture. Following this, I worked in amenity horticulture, namely parks and gardens, for 20 years. During this period I worked as a senior charge hand propagator and then as a supervisor. Just 3 years ago I switched from amenity horticulture to commercial horticulture

During my time in the horticulture industry I initially completed a City and Guilds apprenticeship, I have also obtained an RHS certificate and an Agricultural Training Board Craftsmen Certificate. In my current job, I am Production Manager of Baginton Nursery in Warwickshire. I am responsible for the general propagation and growing of the plants as well as planning summer bedding and overseeing and liasing with the staff at the nursery. I have also recently embarked on a learndirect on-line computer course which is helping me to develop new skills. In March 2001, the nursery was awarded Investors in People status which is a great boost for everybody.

There are many enjoyable aspects to commercial horticulture although it is a very pressurised job which is constantly challenging. However, it is extremely gratifying to see the finished product when so much hard work has been put in.
