Veterinary Nursing
Louise Brixey, Student Nurse

I was always interested in working with animals. After leaving school I started working in a boarding kennels, and it was then that I realised that I wanted to follow a career which involved the nursing of animals. I had the required GCSEs to start my nursing career but was not old enough to enrol onto the RCVS Veterinary Nurse Training Scheme. After giving it a lot of thought, I decided the best option would be to study for the Pre-Veterinary Nursing qualification, as this would not only provide me with background knowledge and experience of veterinary nursing, but it would also fill the 12 month period before I was old enough to finally enrol as a student veterinary nurse.

Fortunately, I found a job closer to home and, after passing my Pre-Veterinary Nursing examinations, I was able to enrol as a student veterinary nurse. I undertook a course at Duchy College of Agriculture in Cornwall where I attended for two blocks of 3 months theoretical training sandwiched around the practical training I was receiving in my work place. I very much enjoy veterinary work as every day is different from the next and I am continually learning new skills. It is a very rewarding career but does require hard work and determination to succeed.
