Trees and Timber
James Jackson, Chargehand Sawyer, James Callander and Son Ltd

I operate a machine in the log mill and assist the supervisor in the day-to-day running of the mill. I have been working in the trees and timber industry for 15 ½ years. I started at James Callander and Son Ltd as a labourer, then was promoted to chargehand sawyer.

I have successfully completed an NVQ in Sawmilling at level 2. As a result, I have a better understanding of the timber industry as a whole. My employer has benefited because I know how important it is to do my job correctly in order to maximise production.

I operate a machine that reduces logs into battens and boards. I help the supervisor with any problems that may occur in the log mill. I am most satisfied after a successful day with few problems.

My employer is introducing a two-shift working day and I have been offered a supervisor position on one of the shifts. I would like the opportunity to do other timber related courses.

Like most industries, the jobs and opportunities in trees and timber are there if people are willing to work hard and learn.
