What is environmental conservation?

If you care about environmental issues and want to make a difference to the environment you live in, a career in environmental conservation could be for you. Professionals in this industry are involved with the conservation of rural and urban landscapes, birds, animals and plants, countryside recreation, and waterway conservation.

Environmental conservation overlaps with areas such as heritage conservation, archaelogy and environmental management. A career in this profession is not only about ‘green’ issues, but is also about making the best use of your knowledge and understanding to provide solutions that will lead to a more sustainable environment for us all.

What opportunities are there for me?

There are environmental conservation opportunities in areas including community recycling, habitat management, countryside recreation, planning and parks, the protection of animals and plants, and even dealing with international issues such as global warming. These opportunities exist in a range of organisations from government departments to the voluntary sector. It is really useful to gain experience through voluntary work, as competition for jobs in this profession has increased.
